A Question of Taste: Using PCR to investigate human evolution

A Question of Taste investigates convergent evolution between humans and chimpanzees, and includes PCR, restriction digestion and gel electrophoresis using students’ own DNA.

Evaluation of 2009/10:

  • 1084 post-16 students attended with their teachers
  • 95% of students would recommend the workshop to their friends
  • 100% of teachers would bring a group of students again.

Testimonials:
“Allowed our students to be stretched beyond the specification, learning about bioinformatics and the human genome.”

“[It was valuable that] students experience practical work in a university-style lab”

“Gave me the opportunity to use advanced equipment and techniques and apply knowledge in a new way.”

“[It was valuable for] students to be able to extend their thinking in confidence without feeling embarrassed. I loved it”

We are now taking bookings for workshops in 2010/11.

The workshop includes:

  • Extraction of students’ DNA
  • PCR
  • Restriction digestion
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • Analaysis of DNA bands
  • Bioinformatics activities
  • Facilitated discussion incorporating How Science Works concepts

This one-day workshop provides enrichment and enhancement for post-16 Biology courses. It was developed to celebrate Charles Darwin’s Bicentenary as part of the Wellcome Trust Survival Rivals project.

Collaborations

Nowgen was commissioned by the Wellcome Trust to assess the feasibility of a number of proposed ideas to explore evolution using practical work.

We are working in collaboration with the Centre for Life in Newcastle, and Explore At-Bristol to develop and deliver the complete workshop.
